Space Photo of the Day: On Novermber 14, 1984, NASA astronaut Dale Gardner strapped on his Manned Maneuvering Unit, stepped off the Space Shuttle Discovery, and proceeded to float fifty meters away, untethered, through the vast emptiness of space, to retrieve a wayward satellite which needed to be hauled back to earth.

Like a space-boss.

The LCROSS impact is still over a day away! Friday, October 9, 2009 at 4:31 AM (PDT), the LCROSS satellite orbiting the Moon will break in two. Half will plummet into the center of a crater on the south pole of the Moon, creating a massive plume of debris coming from deep under the Moon’s surface. The other half will collect data and samples. Scientists hope this will confirm the presence of water on our lovely gravitational life partner. Want to see one of the most badass things ever? Good news, everyone! There’s still time to make plans to see it! There are many options for observing the impact, so check them out and secure your place in witnessing history. Click through for NASA’s datastream dedicated to the mission, including some informative articles on the mission history and background. Don’t miss this! High Res
